"SANDMAN" the eagerly awaited Autobiography of Cedric Robinson MBE, is now available. This is a voluntary information page only, and therefore the information given is done so as a gesture of good will. Cedric Robinson MBE has been leading guided walks across the sands of Morecambe Bay for over 40 years. He is the "official" guide, as appointed by The Queen, Duchy of Lancaster. Mr. Robinson and his wife, Olive live at Guides Farm just to the west of Grange-over-Sands. He is one of life's gentlemen with tremendous knowledge of the sands, which he happily shares with walkers as he leads them on the journey between Arnside and Kents Bank. (approx 8 miles) To the right is a list of proposed walks with dates and times, however due to the changing condition of the sands and the unpredictability of the weather, sometimes the river crossings are unsuitable to take walkers across.
Cedric Robinson (centre) leading walkers through the river. When this happens, Mr. Robinson does not usually cancel the walks, as he is very much aware that large values of charitable giving are dependant on the walks going ahead. Instead he will typically lead a walk out and back from Kents Bank. It is acknowledged that this is not quite the same, but the distance covered is, so walkers are still able to collect sponsorship money. (They also still get to experience the sands and get wet at the same time) One last point to make is the cost of taking walkers across the sands of Morecambe Bay. Since the terrible tragedy involving the Chinese Cocklers the insurance premiums that Mr. Robinson has to pay for the walkers protection, have gone through the roof. Even though he has being carrying out these duties for so long, the insurance companies have refused to take this into account. Furthermore the Duchy of Lancaster have not been willing to offer any help or assistance, therefore Mr. Robinson has been forced to meet the cost himself or cancel all of the planned walks. Organisers of this years walks might make some consideration towards these costs as they plan activities during the months ahead. Mr. Robinson would not ask himself, but as he gives his time and effort for an income of circa £20.00 per YEAR, he should not be asked or expected to subsidise all of the walkers.
Please be as generous as you can towards helping Mr. Robinson. Walks are normally planned to start at Arnside and finish at Kents Bank unless otherwise stated. The walk takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours and is an estimated distance of 8 miles. Please read the other notes below. Cedric and Olive Robinson look forward to seeing you and your families during the 2010 season.
